Discovery Charter School Try-Out Procedure
Team selections will be held in a closed environment with only the coaches and the athletes. Squad selection at all levels will be based on ability and readiness. Selections will be a collaborative effort by the administration, teachers and coaching staff.
The following criteria will apply when choosing team members:
Prior to try-outs, the coach shall provide the following information to all candidates for the team:
- Extent of the try-out period.
- Criteria used to select the team.
- Number of participants to be selected.
- Practice and game commitment.
- Notification procedure

Readiness
- Commitment to Discovery Charter School Athletics.
- Coachability by having the mindset to receive feedback and drive growth.
- Respect for School Rules, Policies, and the Community.
- Leadership within the Discovery Charter School Community.
- Academic accountability and standards are displayed consistently throughout the school year. All players must have a C or better in all classes to join and participate in Blazer athletic activities.

Trailblazers Philosophy
Discovery Charter School is dedicated to creating an athletic program built upon pride, respect, humility, and self-discipline with a foundation of high expectations for all members representing the Trailblazers family. Each student athlete will be held accountable for his/her actions both on a team and in the classroom. Student athlete expectations are put in place where children learn to represent the school in a positive manner, while given the opportunity to fulfill an active role in the school community.
Student athletes and families choosing to represent the Trailblazers Community will be expected to uphold the high standards of the Trailblazers Athletic Program. Becoming a member of an DCS athletic team is a privilege, athletes are expected to model the following Trailblazer standards at all times.
- Respect for coaches/officials/opponent
- Display honesty and exhibit polite behaviors
- Positive classroom engagement
- Represent the school/community/family/self
Any athlete unable to uphold these standards will result in the following starting the first day of school:
- 1st Offense Suspended for 1 game
- 2nd Offense Suspended for 25% of the remaining games
- 3rd Offense will result in the student/athlete being dismissed from the team
- 4th Offense student will no longer be able to compete for any Blazer Athletic team the remainder of the school year.
Fighting: Any student athlete engaging in the following scenarios will face the following
disciplinary actions:
- Putting hands/equipment on another person in a confrontational manner.
- (Game) Making an aggressive move toward another player resulting in a technical foul, ejection or causing an administrator,official or coach to intercede.
- (School) Making an aggressive move toward another student causing an administrator or teacher to intercede.
- Verbally communicating with another person/player in a threatening manner.
o 2nd Offense will result in the student/athlete being dismissed from the team.
o 3rd Offense student will no longer be able to compete for any Blazer Athletic team the remainder of the school year.
Academics
All student athletes must be in good academic standing, which includes acceptable academic performance, based on the student’s ability, individual classroom community expectations, and a strong work ethic demonstrated by participation, effort, and follow through in academic work. Note: A player who is playing a Winter or Spring Sport will have their academic progress evaluated YEAR ROUND starting the first day of school.
A student will be considered ELIGIBLE to participate in athletics, if their most recent Blazers Athletic Progress Report and/or (End of Quarter Report Card) reflects a C or Better in all classes:

Ineligibility Qualifications: Students will be disqualified from participating in athletics if any of the following occurs:
- One grade lower than a C in any subject (Immediate 1st Offense Violation)
- Removal from a classroom for disruptive behavior (Immediate 1st Offense Violation)
- Sleeping in class (Immediate 1st Offense Violation)
- Skipping class (Immediate 1st Offense Violation)
- Profanity - See Blazer Built Student Athlete Team Points
- Uniform Violations - See Blazer Built Student Athlete Team Points
- 1st Offense Violation will eliminate a student from competition for a one-week period. During the period in which the student-athlete is ineligible, he/she will be required to practice with the team.
- 2nd Offense Violation Suspended for 25% of the remaining games
- 3rd Offense Violation will result in the student/athlete being dismissed from the team
Trailblazer Athletics Academic Honor Code
Honesty, integrity, responsibility and mutual respect are the keys to excelling in the classroom and any competitive environment. Students who accept responsibility for creating a climate of academic integrity will benefit in every facet of life.
Some examples of academic violations include but are not limited to the following:
● Copying homework
● Plagiarizing from an Internet source
● Allowing another student to use your work, sharing via text, or any social media platform.
● Cheating on a test or quiz
● Taking photographs of tests, HW, quizzes and any other work not your own and for the purpose of non-academic integrity.
Cheating: Cheating is defined as the dishonest violation of rules or giving or receiving of unauthorized information in academic, extracurricular or other school work, so as to give or gain an unfair advantage.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is copying the language, structure, ideas, and/or thoughts of another person and representing it as one’s own original work or using information obtained from printed or electronic sources that is not appropriately cited.

As we develop student athletes physically and mentally, we also teach them healthy habits of character—this includes pride, respect, humility, and sportsmanship.
Discovery Charter School values sportsmanship thru:
- Demonstrations of humility in victory and defeat by showing respect to teammates, opponents and officials.
- Showing maximum effort through fair play, honesty and within the rules of the game or activity no matter the score.
- Striving to make others better through positivity

SPORTSMANSHIP EJECTION POLICY
This policy applies to all persons involved in athletic contests, including student- athletes, coaches, managers, parents/fans and game administrators. The examples below include behavior or conduct which will result in ejection from a contest.
Fighting includes, but is not limited to, combative acts such as an attempt to:
- Strike an opponent with fist, hands, arms, legs, or feet.
- An attempt to punch or kick an opponent, regardless of whether or not contact is made.
- An attempt to instigate a fight by committing an unsportsmanlike act toward an opponent that causes an opponent to retaliate.
- Leaving the bench area to participate in a fight (contact or no contact).
- Taunting or baiting.
- Profanity directed toward an official, coach, fan or opponent.
- Obscene gestures, including gesturing in such a manner as to intimidate.
- Disrespect when addressing or contacting an official.
- Any parent/fan ejected from a Discovery Charter School athletic event will be subject to review of expectations, and if the behavior continues, the player represented will be removed from the team.
- Discover Charter School will not be a venue for disrespect of student- athletes, coaches, managers, parents and game administrators. All coaches, players and parents/fans must take this of the utmost importance.
- ** NCHSAA guidelines will be followed for each ejection.
Parents, guardians, students and other fans can assist our athletes by honoring and modeling the rules of good sportsmanship. Parents, guardians and coaches are expected to be role models for their players. This means their sportsmanship will always be exemplary
